Gas Detonation Costs Three Police Officers Amid Eviction Operation in the Verona Area
Three members of law enforcement perished and no fewer than 15 people got wounded in what appears to be premeditated blast caused by gas at a farmhouse in northern Italy.
Sequence of Events
The detonation took place as officers and emergency crews approached the residence near the Verona region to carry out an court-ordered eviction for a brother and sister trio aged in their 50s and 60s.
Each of the three officers killed served in the Carabinieri force.
Legal Proceedings
One male and one female were taken into custody at the site and a third person who ran away following the incident was located soon after. The trio have been transported to the hospital.
The blast could be heard approximately 5 kilometers away and photographs from the area displayed the property turned into a heap of debris.
“This is a time for grieving,” said Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, who added that efforts had been made to remove the brother and sister trio in the past.
Background and Motive
The president of the Veneto region, President Zaia, explained the residence was subject to an court order due to debts accrued by the siblings.
Negotiators had been assigned to engage the brothers and sister who had secured themselves into the house. When the Carabinieri arrived soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators think one of the residents triggered the blast.
“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” provincial police commander Claudio Papagno informed reporters.
A propane tank had been set off, and the detonation immediately struck our officers,” he explained.
Molotov cocktails were also found at the site, the Interior Minister confirmed.
Impact Assessment
Those injured by the incident consisted of 11 other members of the police force as well as three members of the state police and a firefighter.
Based on information from the Verona prosecutor, the building was in a dilapidated shape and had lacked electrical service.
He thought the blast had happened on a level above the doorway and stated to the press it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Just prior to the incident, he mentioned officers had “detected a whistling noise, likely the gas canisters being activated”.
Local Response
“We all knew the situation was dire,” neighbors told local news, adding that the trio had earlier warned to “cause an explosion” rather than be evicted.
“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”
Defence Minister Guido Crosetto united with other government officials in commemorating the three officers who had lost their lives in the line of duty.
