The Devastating Shift Only 12 Months Has Made in America

In late October 2024, the landscape was utterly distinct. Prior to the American presidential vote, thoughtful citizens could admit the country's deep flaws – its unfairness and disparity – however they could still perceive it as America. A free society. A land where constitutional order meant something. A state guided by a dignified and upright official, despite his elderly years and increasing frailty.

These days, in late October 2025, many of us scarcely know the nation we live in. People alleged as unauthorized foreigners are collected and pushed into vehicles, sometimes denied due process. The East Wing of the White House – is undergoing demolition for a grotesque event space. The leader is harassing his adversaries or alleged foes and requesting the justice department transfer a huge total of public funds. Soldiers with weapons are dispatched across metropolitan centers on false pretexts. The defense headquarters, renamed the Department of War, has effectively rid itself of regular press examination while it uses possibly reaching nearly $1tn from citizen taxes. Colleges, legal practices, journalism organizations are yielding under the president’s threats, and rich magnates are regarded as members of the royal family.

“The United States, shortly prior to its quarter-millennium anniversary as the planet's foremost free society, has tipped over the edge into authoritarianism and totalitarianism,” a noted author, wrote this past summer. “Ultimately, more quickly than I thought feasible, it did happen here.”

Each day begins with fresh terrors. It is difficult to grasp – and agonizing to acknowledge – how deeply lost our nation is, and how quickly it has happened.

However, it is known that the president was legitimately chosen. Following his deeply disturbing first term and even after the cautions linked to the awareness of Project 2025 – despite the leader directly said publicly he intended to act as an autocrat solely at the start – enough Americans chose him instead of his Democratic opponent.

Frightening as today's circumstances may be, it's more frightening to recognize that we have only been nine months into this presidential term. Where will three more years of this deterioration find us? And if that timeframe turns into an prolonged era, since there is not anyone to restrain this leader from determining that additional tenure is necessary, perhaps for national security reasons?

Granted, all is not lost. We will have congressional elections next year that may establish an alternate governmental control, should Democrats recapture one or both houses of parliament. There are elected officials who are attempting to impose some accountability, such as lawmakers currently launching an investigation concerning the try to cash appropriation from the justice department.

And a leadership election in the next cycle could initiate our journey toward restoration exactly as the previous vote placed us on this disappointing trajectory.

There exist countless citizens demonstrating in urban areas of their cities, like they performed recently at democracy demonstrations.

Robert Reich, stated lately that “the great sleeping giant of the nation is stirring”, similar to past after the Communist witch-hunt era in that decade or during the Vietnam war protests or throughout the Nixon controversy.

In those instances, the tilting vessel eventually was righted.

He claims he understands the signs of that revival and observes it occurring currently. As support, he points to the recent massive protests, the broad, multi-faction opposition to a television host's removal and the largely united refusal by journalists to agree to the defense department’s demands they solely cover authorized information.

“The slumbering entity always remains asleep before some venality becomes so noxious, an specific act so offensive of societal benefit, specific cruelty so loud, that the giant is forced other than to stir.”

It's a positive outlook, and I appreciate the author's seasoned opinion. Possibly he may be validated.

In the meantime, the big questions persist: will the nation ever recover? Can it reclaim its standing in the world and its devotion to legal principles?

Or must we acknowledge that the historical project functioned for a period, and then – abruptly, completely – collapsed?

My negative thoughts tells me that the final scenario is accurate; that everything could be finished. My optimistic spirit, though, tells me that we need to strive, in whatever ways possible.

In my case, working in journalism analysis, that’s about urging journalists to live up, more thoroughly, to their purpose of holding power to account. For different individuals, it could mean working on political races, or organizing rallies, or developing approaches to protect electoral access.

Not even one year prior, we lived in an alternate reality. Twelve months later? Or three years from now? The truth is, we don’t know. All we can do is to strive to continue fighting.

What Offers Me Hope Now
