Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon court with replay technology

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in employing replay technology.

Video review systems will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Players are granted the option to challenge certain rulings from the chair umpire, echoing the system currently in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This technology will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step follows just a year after the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old role of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to review specific decisions, including:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance end of a point.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the number of challenges a competitor can initiate.

Case in Point

An illustrative example took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a tough call for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire viewed a replay and determined the player was guilty of interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews in place at every one of its events.

Further Updates

A further change at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves situations where spectators have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was out or in.

Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
